Understanding the Needs of Curly Hair
Good advice is here! But just before, it is necessary to understand why curly hair is not like the others and requires special attention…
Why curly hair needs special care
Curly hair is often drier than other hair types because of its spiral shape. This unique structure makes it harder for the natural oils produced by the scalp to slide down to the ends. As a result, hair often lacks moisture and is more likely to break. In fact, the tighter the curl, the drier and more fragile the lengths are... But don't panic, with the right gestures and the right products, it is possible to display beautiful, well-defined waves. We'll tell you more 👇
The basics of a good hair routine
Beautiful curly hair requires a well-oiled routine. Products, washing, drying... Every step counts.
Choosing the right products
Gentle shampoos and moisturizing conditioners No more harsh products that strip everything in their path. The ideal shampoo? One with a gentle, sulfate-free formula. The goal is to sweep away impurities, perspiration or pollution residue without drying out or damaging the scalp. To moisturize, conditioner is essential. Aloe vera is a choice ingredient to retain moisture in curls and facilitate detangling without damaging the hair.
Nourishing masks
Curly hair also needs nutrition. At least once a week, applying vegetable oils or hair butters to the lengths helps strengthen the hair and prevent dry ends. A little tip: leave your mask on under a warm towel for even better results.
Leave-in products for maximum hydration
In the quest for beautiful curls, leave-in products are also fabulous allies. These nourishing treatments help maintain hydration throughout the day. Applied to wet or dry hair, they redefine curls and control frizz. Don't deprive yourself!
Washing and drying techniques
Having good products is good. But having the right complementary gestures is even better!
Bet on a gentle wash
Washing too frequently is a bad habit. Shampooing two to three times a week is more than enough to avoid drying out your hair. The right thing to do? Gently massage the scalp without rubbing, and rinse with lukewarm water (never too hot) so as not to open the hair scales too much.
Opt for frizz-free drying
The secret to avoiding frizz: air drying or drying with a diffuser (we'll talk about this a little bit more below). If you prefer a towel, choose a microfiber towel or a simple cotton t-shirt. This will absorb excess water without damaging the hair fiber.
Techniques for Defining and Maintaining Curls
The challenge of curly hair: keeping a beautiful shape all day long. Here are the tips for well-defined curls, with nice movement.
Daily hydration
Yes, your hair needs hydration every day. But that doesn't mean you have to spend hours in the bathroom: a few spritzes of hydrating mist or a dab of curl cream every morning is enough to restore shape and vitality.
Styling and defining curls
Long live “scrunching” and “plopping”
You may have already heard of these two styling/drying techniques. If not, we'll explain everything to you 👉 Scrunching involves scrunching your hair between your palms, moving it upwards, which helps the curls to form. This is done on damp hair, having applied a leave-in moisturizer just beforehand. Then, the idea is to let your hair air dry to get maximum bounce without heat. As for plopping, it involves wrapping your wet hair in a cotton t-shirt after washing, and letting it dry like that, again without heat. This technique helps to limit frizz while boosting the definition of the curls.
Your best ally: the diffuser
When blow-drying is unavoidable, for example in winter when it's cold, first let your hair air dry for a few minutes, and absorb most of the water with a microfiber towel. Spray a heat-protective treatment on your hair then equip yourself with an accessory that is too often forgotten: the diffuser! It is a must for curly hair because it allows you to dry gently, without distorting the shape of the curls, unlike classic drying tips which concentrate the air and stretch the curls by breaking their spring. The ideal is to choose a wide diffuser with spikes to spread the air well and ensure a round drying. In general, always choose accessories that are gentle on the hair, such as wide-toothed combs and non-metal clips.
Some additional tips and advice…
For curls that always look their best, here are some additional tips to incorporate into your daily hair routine.
Bye-bye frizz
Once you've completed your skincare routine, simply leave your curls alone! Because if you manipulate your hair too much during the day, it will cause frizz! Well-protected hair at night At night, hair rubs against the pillow, which can break the curls and create unpleasant surprises when you wake up, i.e. an untamable foamy mass. To avoid bad hair days , opt for a satin bonnet or a silk pillowcase that preserve the shape and natural hydration of the hair fiber. Or tie your hair in a “pineapple” to limit the damage, i.e. a high and loose ponytail.

Common mistakes to avoid.
Last but not least: mistakes to avoid to keep curls healthy and strong.
Be careful, it's hot!
Unfortunately, heat is one of the greatest aggressions for the hair fiber. It damages and deeply dehydrates the hair, which is why it is strongly recommended to limit its use as much as possible. Hair dryers, heated brushes and other straighteners/curlers simply burn the hair, in addition to completely distorting the shape of the curls. If you must use them, always spray a heat-protective treatment beforehand and reserve these tools for special occasions: an important meeting, an event that is important to you... Ideally, you should not take them out of the drawer more than three times a month to avoid excessive use of heat.
Down with chemicals
If you can, also avoid products that contain sulfates, silicones, and other harsh chemicals. They weigh down your hair and can break your beautiful curls in the long run by changing their natural shape and texture. Not great!
